One is said to suffer from major depressive disorder when he experiences the symptoms of depression persistently for two weeks or more. This is a serious condition. However, there are ways of effective major depressive disorder treatment but these require time and patience.
Psychotherapists initially go for a treatment that is based on counselling and sessions to understand the patient and his mental condition. If that is not enough or does not yield the best results he will go for medications through anti-depressants. Multiple anti-depressant medicines are available in the market. Your doctor can go for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), atypical antidepressants, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and tricyclic antidepressants.
SSRIs are the safest of the lot as it has the minimum side effects. Your doctor will not prescribe MAOIs until other medications have failed since this type of anti-depressants cause a lot of harm to the normal functioning of the body. This group of medicines will also need the patient to follow a strict diet since it may have adverse effects by reacting with certain foods like cheese and alcohol if consumed. Also, MAOIs cannot be prescribed in conjunction with SSRIs.
One thing to keep in mind is that the psychotherapist needs to check you properly before starting on your medications to see if there is any underlying medical condition that you have been suffering from, so that the anti-depressants do not interfere with any treatment that you have been normally undergoing.
